Bridge of Fools

As we walk along the path of life,
 always together, side by side,
hand in hand, footsteps harmonized,
we walk along in perfect stride.
True love shall forever be ours
as long as we stand as one,
for leaders and followers know not true love,
 only together will we overcome.

A valley we encounter, so deep and large,
quite an obstacle to pass by,
but look, the other side, peace and happiness,
surely my dear we must try.
"Wait" you say, "there is an easier way",
 pointing to the bridge beside.
"My love" I say with a tear in my eye,
"The bridge you choose is only one-wide."

A decision must be made by you alone
for my choice you already know.
Do you walk through the valley with love at your side?
Or choose to walk the bridge alone?
Deeply you question, my heart feels for you,
honestly, not knowing which is wise.
"Surely" I plead "life's not as easy as that"
pointing to the bridge I now despise.

Just say the word my dear, if you truly wish,
and our love shall be no more.
Your wishes I'll honor, though saddened I'll be,
missing your presence I so much adore.
Defeated again, you disappear across the bridge,
an enemy of mine long past.
For you're not the first love I've lost to him,
nor will you be the last.

"BRIDGE of FOOLS!" I scream as loud as I can,
only the wooden structure hears my pain.
Now I fall to my knees, tears in my eyes,
 feeling utterly destroyed...once again.
Is life really meant to be a lonely journey?
I truly had never hoped so,
But here I am feeling alone again,
accompanied only by my uncaring foe.

Silent and alone, I'm left with only my thoughts,
tranquility, my mind starts to roam.
Is the lonely bridge-walker truly the fool?
Or is it I,
 who sits lonely,
writing this poem?
